DRINKING WATER…SO SIMPLE, YET SO DIFFICULT!

Many people find it difficult to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water every day; I am one of those people. My 2020 New Years’ resolution is to drink more water and I’ve already started with this in December by using some tips that are making it easier to do so. I want to keep this short and sweet as I’m sure we have read about the benefits online or heard it from someone on why we should stay hydrated and how it’s healthy.

IT IS BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR WELLBEING

NUTRIENT ABSORPTION:
Water helps dissolve all sorts of nutrients (vitamins and minerals) for it to become accessible in the body.

METABOLISM:
Keeping your body hydrated actually activates and helps speed up your metabolism.

APPETITE:
Hydration supports your appetite; sometimes when we feel hungry, we are actually dehydrated and our body needs water instead of food.

MUSCLE RECOVERY:
If you are a fitness enthusiast or have an active lifestyle, make sure your water consumption is much higher because hydration supports muscle recovery and supports fitness performance.

BLOATING:
Drinking lots of water helps get rid of toxins and waste in our bodies. When you are dehydrated, this can lead to bloating or constipation so make sure to listen to your body and how you feel. The next time you are bloated, notice how your stomach feels harder than usual. That’s your sign to pay attention to.

ANTI-AGING:
Hydration is essential for anti-aging and maintaining good skin health. Here’s something to pay attention to next time you are dehydrated: that feeling when your mouth and lips feel dry! – Your body is telling you “I NEED WATER!”

HEADACHES OR MIGRAINES:
I have many friends and even family members that suffer from horrible headaches or migraines and in most cases, it is due dehydration; another crucial sign to pay attention to because your body is telling you how badly it needs water. Headaches and migraines will lead to a lack of concentration which affects productivity levels, and it even affects your mood.

HERE IS WHAT I’M DOING TO INCREASE MY DAILY WATER CONSUMPTION

A common symptom our doctors at The Elixir Clinic notice with their clients is dehydration. One of the main “ingredients” in all our VitaDrip® infusions is saline water to support hydration for the body. Saline water helps replenish the body with necessary electrolytes and administering it intravenously is an effective method as it bypasses the digestive tract and directly enters your bloodstream. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to stop drinking water and only rely on IV infusions. Drinking water is and must become an important aspect of your lifestyle; an everyday task.

With the below tips, I hope I can help you increase your water consumption and make a change:

  • Keep 1-2 bottles of water on your bedside table to make it easily accessible.
  • The first thing you should do when you wake up is to drink the bottle of water that you put next to your bedside table.
  • As you start your morning, kick-start your metabolism by drinking a cup of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • Aim to drink a cup of water 30 minutes before each meal as a reminder.
  • When eating a meal, I prefer to drink a cup of water once I have finished. I recommend you to do the same rather than drinking during your meal; unless it’s necessary.
  • Keep a bottle of water with you at all times, wherever you are! Also to make it easier to drink, try adding cucumber, lemon, mint, blueberries, whatever that you enjoy as a flavor.
  • Some find it easier to drink water by making the water warm or making it cold with ice, all depends on your preferences!
  • Always keep a bottle of water with you while exercising or on a hot day as hydration is essential during these periods.
  • Avoid sugary drinks (really, they are so bad for you!)
  • Frequent Flyers – If you travel very regularly, you have to make sure you are well hydrated. Try to avoid juices and alcoholic drinks while flying and aim to drink as much water as possible on your short or long haul flights.
  • Set a challenge for yourself as this is something I’ve started doing. I keep all my empty bottles on my desk at the office so that before I leave I can count how much water I drank in a day.
  • We are always on our mobile devices, so using an app as a reminder really works well! I downloaded the “Water Reminder – Daily Tracker” in the App Store to keep reminding me to drink water.
  • I recently bought an Apple Watch to support small changes in my lifestyle such as taking one minute breaks at various points in my busy day to become mindful of my breathing, to stand up and walk if I’ve been sitting at work for too long, and to remember to drink water!
