Excessive Sweating…Yes, There Is a Solution!

Excessive sweating can be uncomfortable, annoying, embarrassing, and MANY people suffer from it! Unfortunately, it does affect one’s daily life, psychological well-being, and social life but there are ways to treat it.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a disorder/condition that results in excessive sweating in common areas such as underarms, palms, and feet. It can occur in unusual situations, such as cooler weather, or even without any specific trigger.

Hyperhidrosis is characterized by an abnormal response to heat, exertion, and stress with pronounced sweating. It may be present from birth or might develop later in life, however in most cases of excessive sweating tend to start during a person’s teenage years.

Sweating is a natural response to certain conditions, such as warm weather, physical activity, stress, and feelings of fear or anger. With hyperhidrosis, you sweat more than usual for no apparent reason. The underlying cause depends on which type of hyperhidrosis you have:

Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis

Sweating mainly occurs on your feet, hands, face, head, and underarms. It usually starts in childhood. About 30% to 50% of people with this type have a family history of excessive sweating. When excessive sweating is localized, for example, palmoplantar hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating of the palms and soles.

Secondary Generalized Hyperhidrosis

Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis is sweating caused by a medical condition or as a side effect of certain medications. It generally starts in adulthood. With this type, you might sweat all over your body, or in just one area. You might also sweat while you’re sleeping.

What Is the Solution?

BOTOX® (botulinum toxin) injections are commonly used to treat severe hyperhidrosis as they block the nerves that stimulate your sweat glands. The recommended number of sessions is usually only determined upon consultation.

BOTOX® is a natural and purified protein with the ability to temporarily block the secretion of the chemical that is responsible for “turning on” the body’s sweat glands. By blocking or interrupting, this chemical messenger, botulinum toxin “turns off” sweating at the area where it has been injected such as armpits, hands, feet, head, and facial.

Results start to become noticeable approximately 2-4 days after the treatment with full effects usually noted within 2 weeks. The treatment will typically last 4-12 months, but this varies dependent on the patients’ lifestyle.

Treatment Process

Ensure a qualified practitioner is looking after you to ensure the best results. The treatment itself, dependent not the area, can take less than 10 minutes and doesn’t restrict the patient from carrying on with their day-t0-day activities. It is recommended to avoid high-intensity training, sauna, or steam room on the day of the treatment.

During the procedure, a fine needle is used to inject BOTOX® under the skin intermittently throughout the area of excessive sweating. To ease any discomfort, the doctor may recommend for numbing of the area. A follow-up is requested 1-2 weeks post-treatment and it is useful for any “touch-up” that might be required during the first round of treatment to maximize benefits.
